Over the North Pole

In February 1954, Aries IV, a Canberra aircraft from the Royal Air Force Flying College at Manby, made the first flight by a British jet over the Geographical North Pole. The flight routed from Churchill, Alaska, over the North Pole, before returning to Churchill. The flight was piloted by Wing Commander C.S.G. Stanbury and was made during daylight with navigation being checked using the sun. The thermometer at 45,000ft showed -46°F, representing 78 degrees of frost.

Hunter joins 43 Squadron

The first production version of the Hunter F.1 (WT555) made its maiden flight on 16 May 1953. Eventually 113 were built by Hawker at Kingston and a further twenty-six at the Blackpool factory. The need to incorporate the ventral air brake below the fuselage delayed entry of the F.1 into service and it was July 1954 before they were delivered to 43 Squadron at RAF Leuchars. The F.1 remained with 43 Squadron until November 1956 although the F.4 had started to arrive with the squadron in February of the same year.
